Livin' the Dream
Hello, my name is P-Cay Burkhalter and I’m the Camp Host & Events Coordinator for Buena Vista Wildlife Safari and RV Park.
In September of 2017, I retired from a company based in Fort Worth, TX. I was with the company 30 years and retired as one of their Event Coordinators.
When I retired, I upgraded my 18-foot travel trailer to a 28-foot travel trailer and spent most of my time camping at least 10 to 15 days of the month. I also owned a monogram business called Tin Gypsy Monograms that I ran part time.
After about 18 months into retirement, I started becoming bored and a little depressed, since I was the first of my friends that retired. I didn’t want to go back into the Corporate World again. One night I saw a job posting listed on Facebook on one of the RV pages. They needed a Camp Host for at least 4 weeks. I decided to apply - I mean, “What the heck, it’s just 4 weeks right?!” Once I spoke with the owner on the phone, I became very excited and we set up a time for us to meet at the Safari. When I arrived, I fell in love with the place and offered to stay 8 weeks.
On April 1st, I packed the dogs and the trailer and headed south for the Hill County. Within a weeks’ time I knew I had found my “place”.
Skipping past all the details…. I now have upgraded my 28-foot bumper pull travel trailer to a 36-foot fifth wheel and am living here on the property full time. My days are full of many chores around the campground and with the Safari. There is never a dull moment. I bottle fed an Angora Goat 3 times a day for 2 months, wrangled Bison out of the Longhorn pen, corralled Pygmy goats after escaping the petting zoo, helped herd Angora Goats back across a cattle guard … and the list goes on.
My entire life, I have camped with family and friends and wanted to retire to the RV World full time. As a child, I always wanted to be a Park Ranger or a Zookeeper. Well look at me now. Who says dreams can’t come true?
